AGRIBITION AT A
GLANCE
|
If there's a star
that shines brightly on prairie agriculture, it's Canadian Western Agribition.
The world-renowned agricultural event, which rates as one of the top
six shows in the world, has been lighting up the prairies each year for
the past twenty-five years.
Agribition's reputation, built on excellence, reaches out to attract exhibitors
and visitors from around the world. Annually, 150,000 people from nine Canadian
provinces, 23 countries and 28 U.S. states attend the Show. Over the last
six years, 57 countries have been represented, which illustrates the extensive
appeal of this event.
Few agricultural exhibitions in the world can claim to be a centre point
for agricultural export, education and entertainment.
Agribition, held in tremendous new facilities which include 19 acres
of indoor floor space, is recognized as having the best facilities in western
Canada, and the second largest in Canada. The following are a number of
highlights which keep both rural and urban audiences coming back year after
year.
The livestock show, the event
that started Agribition on the road to stardom, is still the heart of the
Show. Last year over 4,200 head of cattle, horses, swine and sheep were
exhibited. This number does not include the affiliated livestock exhibits
of poultry, eggs and dairy products. Over $2.5 million worth of livestock
were sold at the Show.
Customers from around the world attend Agribition to see some of the best
genetics in the beef business world-wide. Last year, just over 2,000 purebred
animals represented 17 cattle breeds. Agribition is recognized as the largest
and highest quality of beef cattle displayed in Canada and one of the top
six in the world.
Agribition, based on the idea of a marketplace, is unique among world-class
Shows because of the large amount of buying and selling that takes place.
While over two and a half million dollars changes hands at the auctions,
this amount does not include the thousands of dollars in private sales that
occur as a result of contacts made at Agribition.
An International Business Centre provides
convenience and comfort for all business people attending, particularly
international visitors. This unique facility allows visitors to carry on
their business dealings by providing them conveniences such as secretarial
services, communication equipment (telephone and facsimile) and private
meeting areas. The International Business Centre has added to the awareness
of the international scope of the Show, and strengthened ties between Canadian
and international agribusiness people.
Agribition attracts some of the best that agriculture
has to offer in the world and that means the best get special recognition.
A Profile of Champions recognizes the champion bull and
female from each of 17 purebred cattle breeds, Holsteins, and Steer Show
with a special Parade of Champions and decorated stalls.
Agribition presents an exciting high-priced auction
of champion agricultural products at the beginning of the week long show,
the Sale of Champions. Agribition holds the record for
the highest price ever paid for two dozen eggs -- $8,000.00. A live market
steer sold for over $20/pound, and a sheaf of durum wheat for $5,000.00.
A Bison Show and Sale continues to
attract large crowds since its inception in 1993.
Agricultural education is an important aspect of the Show.
Youngsters can wade knee deep in agriculture at the Agri-Ed Showcase.
The "hands-on" show is designed to teach children from both urban
and rural areas about all aspects of agriculture. Over 9,000 children attended
the Showcase last year and took part in a wide range of activities. To teach
them about various types of agriculture, they can participate in an auction,
watch chicks hatch and learn about the crop and meat production process.
The 4-H and Youth Activities program also
provides high-school students the opportunity to learn more about agriculture
and encourage them to stay involved in the industry.
The Western Lifestyles Showcase,
has become a major drawing card for the entire family. The Showcase takes
Agribition "uptown", linking the producer and the consumer with
a program of education and entertainment centering around western food,
fashion and lifestyles.
A Grain and Forage Showcase offers
an excellent opportunity to grain and forage producers to present their
products to prospective buyers and to educate the general audience about
quality seed.
Agribusiness people and producers know its important
to keep up-to-date with the latest development in the agriculture industry,
and Agribition's Trade and Technology Show does just that,
featuring displays on the latest technology for all areas of agriculture.
Four hundred exhibitors in over 600 booths will display a tremendous variety
and quality, of agricultural products, services and technology.
First-class family entertainment is provided each weekday
evening at the Rodeo with events ranging from wild bull
riding to steer wrestling. Some of the best cowboys in the world join present
and past Canadian champions to compete for a total of over $ 70,000 in prize
money. The National Non-Pro and Open Cutting Horse Finals,
the Horse Pulls, Hitches and Stock Dog Trial Finals, are
some further examples of family entertainment that takes place at the Show.
A Rodeo dance follow the final rodeo performance.
The Food Lot was introduced two years
ago to focus on new food products and prairie-based meals. Here the consumer
can see the direct connection with agriculture.
Introducing new events adds excitement to the show each year and provides
added attractions for its audience. Agribition will continue to reflect
what is happening in the industry and be the venue to see, learn about,
and buy agriculture.
"This is the one place visitors can view the full range of products
and services applicable to agriculture, and at the same time enjoy the latest
in farm lifestyle information for the whole family. Exhibitors and competition
like this brings out the finest exhibitors, spectators and buyers in Canada
and around the world. Without a doubt, anyone coming to Canadian Western
Agribition can expect to see the very best." (Quote from
Wayne Gamble, Executive Vice President). |
