CANADIAN WESTERN AGRIBITION CELEBRATES 25TH ANNIVERSARY
Canadian Western Agrbitiion's 25th Anniversary provided lots to see and
do for urban and rural visitors alike says Brian Rossnagel, President of
Canadian Western Agribition.
On the opening weekend, Family Day activities including Agribition's
first Sunday rodeo matinee rodeo in over a decade attracted "standing
Room only" crowds and established a very positive pattern of urban
attendance for the show. Family Day Sunday attracted a Sunday record attendance.
Rural participation continued strong for the Agribition livestock and agriculture
shows and for new events such as the first Agribition sale of Elk.
International attendance of over 425 people from 23 countries and 27
Amercian states maintained the pattern of recent years and re-confirmed
Agribition's stature as Canada's International Marketplace. International
attendance was highlighted by Mopnday's one-day record of 142 registrants
at Agribition's International Business Centre.
Rossnagle points out the international sales and trade agreements continue
to be an ijmportant aspect of the show. "For example, we had a trade
agreement signed this week at Agribition between a private company - Canadian
Livestock Services and the Province of Shandong China and witnessed by Canada's
Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, Hounourable Ralph Goodale,"
Rossnagel syas. "Those sorts of agreements and more traditional private-treaty
dealing are a very important part of Agribition's service to our participant's."
United States buyers were strong supporters of the auction sales again
in 1995. The highseller of the week, a $ 20,000 Shorthorn bull, was one
of the sale lots to move of the border. The bull was consigned by Huberdale
Farms of Lipton, SK and sold to Millvbale Farms and Melroe Shorthorns of
Gwinner, North Dakota.
The Agribition Simmental sale, which was the first Agribition event to
feature a Satellite broadcasdt, sold two lots to an Ontario buyer via the
satillite. The Simmental sale also saw the sale of a bull consigned by mcMillen
Ranching of Carievale, SK for $15,000 to Pheasantdale Simmentals of Balcarres,
SK.
Agribition's newest sale offering, a consignment of 13 Elk, attracted
a top price of $ 19,600 and a sale total of nearly $ 200,000. The high seller
was a female consigned by Northern Genetics Ltd. of Yellow Grass, SK which
sold to Douglas Wilson of Morse, SK. The Elk auction also included a pair
of remote sales through the use of satellite communication technology.
As a new Agribition event, the Elk sale attracted a standing room only
crowd of spectators and participants. There was the same level of interest
in Agribition's Ranch Horse and Stock Dog sale. In the sale, a female dog,
which was brought to Canada from Ireland, sold for $ 4,800 to Lester Pryce
of Broderick, SK>
Agribition's heavy horse show, heavy horse pull competition, Cutting
Horse Championships, and Team Roping, Team Penning and Reinging Horse competition
all provided a showcase for these special horses and horsemanship skills.
These events were popular spectator events all week long.
Saskatchewan's growing Biotechnology industry was featured on Agribition's
Advanced Technology Day. A series of educational seminars forcused on various
aspects of biotechnology and its role in agricultural producation and trade.
Corporate support for Canadian Westsern Agribition is a key factor in
the success o fthe show." says President Rossnagel. "We were proud
to recognze three 25 year supportors at the Sale of Champions. O & T
Poultry of Regina,. Watson Tractor of Regina, and Hoechst/AgrEvo are all
examples of the support we get from the local, national and international
corporations."
Rossnagel also pointed to a new three-year partnership agreement signed
this week with Saskatchewan Agriculture and Agri-Food as another important
indicator of support for Canadian Western Agribition. The agreement was
signed by Agriculture and Agri-Food Hounourable Eric Upshall and Canadian
Western Agribition Executive Vice Presidnet Wayne Gamble.
Along with Ministers Goodale and Upshall, special guest visitors to Agribition
this week for the 25th annual show included Regina Mayor Doug Archer and
Their Hounours Lieutenat Governer Jack Wiebe and Mrs. Wiebe. A highlight
of the 25th anniversayr Agribition was the show's first-ever wedding. Keath
Brooks and Shirley Lake of REgina celebrated their marriage surrounded by
their friends at the Agribition livestock exhibitor's reception.
