Carex buchananii

Above photo taken near the end of October

Unique and beautiful brown colouring. The foliage is fine textured, attractively curled at the end of each stem.

Has grown 18" to 24" in height for us. Is non-invasive. The above clump in its second year was about 24" wide at the top.  We have it growing in partial shade. Its colouring works well there.

Is native to New Zealand, very tender to Regina (rated hardy zone 6). Usually will survive only a couple of winters for us. We like this grass so much that we'll grow it as an annual if we can't overwinter it.

Glen's score:  9.
