Mat-forming species with basal leaves in rosettes. Basal leaves white tomentose both sides, spatulate, basal leaf measured at 1 cm long by 4 mm wide. 9 - 12 stem leaves. Stem leaves alternate, lanceolate, stem leaf highlighted in photograph above was 1 cm long by 3 mm wide. Involucre 4-5 mm high, bracts dark brown. Both male and female plants were present. Colonies consist of many basal rosettes with few flowering stems.

This species can be identified by its dark brown bracts and an involucre 4-5 mm high. 

Height is listed in Budd's Flora to 6 cm, I  measured plants to 12 cm tall. 

Habitat is gravelly slopes.

This plant is rare, listed as an S2S3 by the Saskatchewan Conservation Data Centre. 

Above photos taken June 16th, rocky slopes in the Cypress Hills, about 450 km southwest of our home in Regina, SK.
