Oxytropis monticola - photos and description

Saskatchewan's Wildflowers

15 cm ruler for scale

Pointed keel

Cream coloured blooms appear in late June, early July. Scapes erect and quite stiff. Infloresence in a long, oblong spike to 18.5 cm long. Stems and leaves are woolly, giving the plant's foliage a grey-green appearance. Leaves pinnate, we counted up to 33 leaflets. Leaflets lanceolate to oblanceolate, typical leaflet measured 2.5 cm long and 8 mm wide.

Height listed in Budd's Flora from 15 to 40 cm. We measured plants to 66 cm tall.

Habitat is moist woodland and open wooded areas from the prairies to the boreal forest. Common.

Could be mistaken for another Locoweed which grows in Saskatchewan - Oxytropis campestris, both have pale yellow flowers. However, the flower spike of that plant is only from 4 to 5 cm in length, while for O. campestris it is 5 to 20 cm in length (Taxonomic Reminder for Recognizing Saskatchewan Plants).

We took these photos July 3rd, roadside in the boreal forest, 450 km north east of our home in Regina, SK.
