Astilboides tabularis

     


The word 'tabularis' means 'table-like' which is an apt description of its leaves in mid-June

As you can see above, large leaves are the attraction of this plant. Two in the photo above measured 14" in diameter. Sends up a tall flower spike 3.5 feet tall in early July.

This chap does not like to dry out, leaves will burn if you let that happen. My solution has been to plant it in a shady area, plant it in moisture retentive soil, put a sprinkler head near it so that I know it gets wet whenever I turn on the sprinklers.

Plant used to be classified as a species of Rodgersia, now has been placed in a genus all on its own.

Hardy zone 3.

Height of flower spike to about 42", spread of 30".
