Helleborus niger

Shade perennial with evergreen, leathery leaves. Spring bloomer (mid-May) here in zone 3. Blooms at Christmas in warmer climes.

New blooms are white with a touch of pink, then slowly turn a pale green.

Grows 8" tall, floppy foliage, spread 16".

Year 2000 update - darn thing died over the winter. Had overwintered for 2 winters, things were just getting interesting. I'll be having another go with Hellebores, they're cool plants. Our friend Grace kindly gave us a seedling in late summer of 2000 (her plant had self-seeded), so hopefully will have this plant again in our garden in future years.

Hardy to zone 4.

Glen's score:  6.
