  Winter Haiku

On the highest hill
coyote howling to his mate -
a farm dog replies.

  *

In January snow,
an insomniac gopher -
chickadees singing.

  *

Sun dogs bristling,
hard blue winter sky cloudless
Pup sleeps by the fire.

  *

The long winter night
swift sled dogs loping along
snarl at a skidoo.

  *

Ghostly sickle moon
luminescence of street lamps
snow falling softly.

  *

Bitter cold morning
ferns and frost flowers blooming
on our windowpanes.

  *

Leafless trees bend low -
snow coats the raggedy brim
of the snowman's hat.
